The JPS Special: A Livery Rebuilt in Leather

One-of-one JPS Special leather jacket by Walter Leather Bespoke, black cowhide with gold piping and hand-stitched crest
WALTER LEATHER - THE JOHN PLAYER SPECIAL 1/1

Deep, rich black cowhide. Supple, medium-weight, the kind that moves with the body instead of against it. That's where the JPS Special begins, before a single line of gold ever touches it.

Every panel is hand-cut, then hand-stitched with fine golden leather piping and gold Gutermann thread, run in patterns that follow the body lines of the jacket rather than sit on top of them. The curves aren't decorative. They're drawn to carry the same sense of speed the original John Player Special livery carried on the track: low, lean, moving even at rest.

The crest on the chest isn't printed or embroidered. It's hand-cut leather artwork, built in gold kid skin, the softest hide we work with, chosen specifically because a livery this fine deserved a material fine enough to hold its detail.

Built Around a Livery, Not a Trend

Most jackets that reference motorsport liveries do it with a printed graphic or a patch ordered off a supplier's catalogue. The JPS Special isn't referencing the livery. It's rebuilding it, panel by panel, in a completely different material, using techniques that have nothing to do with paint or vinyl and everything to do with a needle, a blade, and a steady hand.

That's the difference between decoration and craft. Decoration copies a look. Craft understands why the look worked in the first place, then finds a way to say the same thing in leather.

The interior carries the same attention most people will never see. A custom-fit lining sized to the collector, not a stock pattern, with an interior pocket finished in the same golden leather used for the crest outside. Details built for the person wearing the jacket, not for anyone looking at it from across the room.

One Jacket, One Collector

The JPS Special is not a run, a drop, or a limited edition. It is a single jacket, built once, for one collector, the same way every commission leaves our Guadalajara atelier. Once it's delivered, this exact pattern is retired. No one else will own this jacket, in this leather, with this stitching, ever again.

It was made for the kind of collector who already knows what a livery like this means, and wanted to wear it rather than just remember it.

Walter Leather Bespoke has crafted one-of-one leather commissions for automotive and motorsport collectors since 1990, from our atelier in Guadalajara, Mexico. Find us at Pebble Beach Retro Auto during Monterey Car Week, August 2026.
